Procrastination is not a moral failure.

It’s a result of:
• Delayed reinforcement
• Competing schedules
• Environmental contingencies

When we label it laziness, we miss the mechanism.

Behavior follows reinforcement.

If you want to reduce procrastination, increase reinforcement.

Deadlines create fixed interval schedules.
Fixed interval schedules create scalloped responding.

So what do we do?

✔ Break large tasks into smaller response units
✔ Attach reinforcemen
Let’s get rid of the shame. 

Procrastination feels personal. But from a behavioral perspective, it’s predictable. 

When reinforcement is only available at the deadline, responding increases right before that deadline.
